MODEL 256/PC VERSUS MODEL 256

The Model 256 is available in two versions: the original Model 256 and the upgraded Model
256/PC. The PC version adds a PC interface through the existing printer/serial port and also
adds User Labels.
The PC version allows the tester to be controlled through the serial port normally used for a
printer. In addition, when Cablescan optional TERM software is installed and run on the PC,
wire list programs can be downloaded into the Model 256/PC, or programs can be read from the
tester and stored on disk in the PC. Wire list programs previously created for other Cablescan
testers, such as the Model 512 and 4000, are compatible and can be downloaded and run on the
Model 256/PC as long as they do not exceed 256 points.
CONVERSION
Most Model 256 testers can be converted between the two versions by simply changing the
internal software. However, testers prior to serial number 1261 that do not have 14 internal
program storage capability cannot be converted to the PC version.
cartridges are directly compatible and can be loaded and run on the Model 256/PC.
TEST POINT DISPLAYS
When displaying point numbers, the standard Model 256 displays a number that is in reference
to the connector pin numbers on the rear of the tester. The first digit of the point number display
refers to the connector number 1 through 4. The last two digits refer to the pin number of the
connector. Therefore, point number 66, which is pin number two on the second connector J2,
would be displayed as 2-02. Point numbers range between point 1 (1-01) and point 256 (4-64).
The Model 256/PC displays point numbers in ascending order from point 1 to point 256 -
compatible to other Cablescan testers such as the Model 512 and Model 4000. This change is
necessary in order to make programs compatible between the various testers. The table below
shows the relationship between the rear panel connectors and the actual test points displayed.
