3 TAKING A READING

3.1 Before you start
Check the calibration of your gauge - See "Calibration adjustment" on page 17.
Inspect the underside of the instrument to ensure it is clean and free of scratches. Also inspect the
lenses and the channels leading to them and remove any dust that may have accumulated.
3.2 Procedure
1. Place the gauge on the test surface ensuring that the aperture is positioned on the area you want to
measure; use the arrows on the sides of the gauge to aid positioning.
2. Switch on the gauge and select the measurement angle (dual and triple angle models only).
3. Press and hold the green READ button to take a reading. It is recommended that the button is held
until a stable reading is observed.
The number of readings (STORE) will increase by one and the Gloss Units reading (VALUE) appears
in the display approximately 1 second after the READ button is pressed. All statistical values are
updated automatically.
If you want to take continuous readings, keep the READ button pressed and move the gauge across
the test surface; the reading (VALUE) will continuously update as the gauge is moved. When the
READ button is released, the reading (VALUE) will be entered into the gauge memory. This technique
enables anomalous areas to be identified easily without the need to take numerous individual
readings.
All readings are given in Gloss Units (GU), as defined by the relevant national or international standards
(e.g. ISO 2813, TAPPI T480, etc.).
