Cleaning and Inspection of Components

Because the physical size of the transmission core of the optical fiber is typically only 9
microns in size, debris such as a single particle of dust or smoke or strand of hair can impair
the path enough to cause transmission problems.
Any contamination in the fiber connection can cause failure of a component or failure of the
system. It is important that these cleaning steps be preformed in sequence. The following
cleaning procedures are described below:

General Cleaning Overview

The following information is provided as an overview that should be reviewed before
cleaning any fiber optics or related connectors.

Invisible laser radiation can be emitted from disconnected fibers or
connectors. do not stare into beams or view directly with optical instruments.
NOTE
Only use alcohol after an initial cleaning does not improve performance, and
a visual inspection indicates dirt or debris is present. Always reclean with a
fabric or thread cleaner after using alcohol as alcohol can leave a residue that
may degrade performance.
■ Always turn off any laser source before inspecting connectors, optical components or
