Sharpening Cleavers and Machetes
(Follow these steps to sharpen most cleavers and small machetes.
(Not intended for large machetes or swords).
Set-up
Install the Scissor and Tool guide.
Position the machine so that you are facing the scissor guide
side as shown below (drill port facing away from you).
Set the power switch to low speed (I)
1. Insert the blade into the tool guide as shown (handle facing
right) with the 1st side of the blade resting on the tool guide
surface and the cutting edge resting on the edge guide sur-
face.
2. Slowly slide the blade through the guide to the right (from
heel to tip) along the tool guide surface while maintaining
contact with one or both of the edge guide surfaces. Repeat
5 strokes. (Use light pressure only. Support the weight of the
blade with your hands as it is sharpened).
3. Rotate the tool so that the 2nd side can be sharpened (handle
facing left). Repeat 5 slow strokes to the right (from tip to heel)
while keeping contact with the tool guide surface and edge
guide surfaces.
4. Repeat 5 sets of strokes on each side until a light burr is formed
along the full length of the blade. (Remember to support the
blade with your hands as it is sharpened).
TIPS:
Do not sharpen blades with loose handles or damage. Repair
or replace prior to sharpening to avoid injury. If the blade
requires more than 2 minutes of grinding per side we recom-
mend they be professionally restored or replaced.
Only sharpen tools that fit in the guide and are adequately
supported. Do not force tools that are too large into the
machine. Do not sharpen tools that are tool small to be ad-
equately supported.
