SELECTING A COUPON FOR RESTARTS
The general set up is the same as setting up for the other joints. The
user signs in on the "Login" screen and presses the green continue
button. This will take the user to the "Joint Selection" screen. There
are two coupons that can be used for practicing Restarts: Practice
Plate and Pipe on Plate.

Once the desired coupon is selected then select the desired process
(Short Circuit GMAW or 7018 SMAW). Follow the normal coupon
setup process. The coupon will appear as a partially completed weld
bead with a small gap. The student will choose either end as the
starting point to restart and fill the gap.

VISUAL CUES FOR RESTARTS
Prior to creating the weld access the visual cue for Restarts by
pressing the orange Action and Cues. Find and select "Restart".
Once the weld device is close to the starting position a circle will
appear. The color of the circle cue indicates the distance from the
center of the crater to the starting position. Red is out of the control
limits and would produce a red scoring rectangle on the LASER chart.
A green circle is considered an acceptable starting position.
The backstep distance is measured from the start position. A straight
line thru the circle is the cue. A green line is acceptable, red would
be out of the control limits.
Backstep time is measured by the amount of fill in the circle. Red
fill can be the result of too much time (fill outside of the circle) or too
little time (does not fill to the edge of the circle). Green is acceptable.
SCORING RESTARTS
A green rectangular block on the chart for the backstep portion of the
weld is considered a passing Restart. A red block would indicate the
Restart parameters exceeded the control limits.
