7 MAINTENANCE AND CARE

WARNING! Risk of injury. Inadvertent
switching on of the engine can lead to serious in-
juries.
Before setting, maintenance and repair work,
always switch off the engine and secure
against being switched on again.
Regular maintenance is essential for safety
and maintaining performance.
Observe the maintenance schedule.
For use under more demanding conditions,
more frequent maintenance is required.
1. Before all maintenance and cleaning work:
Remove the spark plug connector (02/2) from
the spark plug (02/1).
2. Perform the maintenance and cleaning work
described in this section according to the
maintenance schedule.
3. After maintenance and cleaning work: Reat-
tach the spark plug connector to the spark
plug.
7.1

Cleaning the air filter (03)

Clean the air filter regularly.
Replace the air filter if damaged.
1. Loosen the screw (03/1).
2. Remove the air filter cover (03/2).
3. Remove the filter (03/3) and knock it out
against a hard surface until the dirt has been
removed. Do not brush out!
4. Reinstall the filter.
5. Put back the air filter cover.
6. Tighten the screw again.
7.2

Maintaining the spark plug (02)

Prescribed spark plug type: see chapter 13 "Re-
placement parts", page 23.
WARNING! Risk of injury from electric
shock. Checking the ignition spark with the spark
plug removed may result in serious injury from
electric shock and fire.
Never check the ignition spark function with
the spark plug removed. Use an ignition
spark tester instead.
20
IMPORTANT! Danger of engine damage.
Operating the engine with the incorrect spark
plug or without a spark plug will result in serious
engine damage!
Always use the specified spark plug type.
Never try to start the engine without a spark
plug.
1. Unscrew the spark plug (02/1) with a socket
wrench.
2. Clean the electrodes (02/3) with a metal
brush and remove any soot deposits.
3. Check the correct electrode gap with a feeler
gauge.
Note: The electrode gap of the spark plug
should be 0.5 mm – 0.7 mm.
4. Reinsert the spark plug and tighten with a
socket wrench.
7.3

Cleaning the engine

WARNING! Danger of explosion and fire.
Foreign objects on the engine can cause the ap-
pliance to catch fire. Fire can lead to serious inju-
ries.
Remove combustible debris (e.g. grass,
leaves, grease) from the engine, especially
from the exhaust and cylinder area.
Check and clean the exhaust and cylinder ar-
ea regularly.
IMPORTANT! Danger from water. Penetrat-
ing water (ignition system, carburettor...) can lead
to malfunctions.
Do not spray the engine with water.
1. Allow the engine to cool before cleaning.
2. Remove the contamination regularly from the
engine with a cleaning cloth or brush.
3. Blow-off all waste and dirt residues from the
silencer and its cover using compressed air.
4. Clean the cooling system:
Remove obstructions from cooling air
openings.
In order to prevent overheating, also
clean the internal cooling vanes and sur-
faces.
5. Wipe plastic parts with a damp sponge and
detergent.
7.4
