Terminating the SCSI Bus

To ensure reliable communication on the SCSI bus, terminators
must be installed (or enabled) on the devices at the physical ends
of the SCSI bus. The terminators on all devices between the phys-
ical ends of the SCSI bus must be removed (or disabled).
Following are general guidelines for terminating a SCSI bus:
Termination is usually controlled by installing or removing a
SCSI terminator. On some SCSI devices, termination is con-
trolled by setting a switch on the back of the device.
Some SCSI devices come from the factory with termination
enabled, but most LVD SCSI devices come with termination
disabled.
There are various methods for terminating hard disks and other
SCSI devices. If you are not sure how to set termination for your
particular device, refer to the device documentation.
The illustration below shows three possible areas where a SCSI
bus is terminated:
Block terminator connected
to a SCSI device
Adaptec PowerDomain 29160/29160N
Built-in terminator on a SCSI cable
Termination switch
on a SCSI device
Nonterminated end
