CREATING SOUNDS

Sound Synthesis
Tj Basic arrangement of the D SS-1 and how it affects
the sound.
I A s in a traditional analog synthesizer, the DSS-1
gives you the convenience of a subtractive technique
whereby the oscillators provide an audio signal which
is processed by the V C F and VCA.
This lets you consider the sound in terms of three
basic components which are pitch, timbre (or tone
color), and volume (or dynamics).
■ However, the DSS-1 is completely different from con
ventional subtractive synthesizers when it comes to
the source of the waveforms output by the oscillators.
Conventional analog synths only give you a few fixed
waveforms such as square waves and sawtooth
waves. With the DSS-1 you can use virtually any
waveform as the oscillator waveform.
This gives you incredible freedom and flexibility to
create the sounds that you want.
