Making multisounds
3
;
■ We now know that the DSS-1 multisounds are made
up of a number of sounds assigned to sections of the
keyboard together with the multisound parameters
that control how the sound data is read from memory.
To obtain an individual sound you can sample an ac
tual sound {from a microphone or tape) or you can
create a new sound. Then you can edit the sound
Therefore, the DSS-1 offers you functions tor (1)
sampling sounds, (2) creating sounds, and (3) editing
sounds.
To make a multisound, we can see that there are two
broad categories of processes involved. First, there is
the matter of obtaining the sounds that form the raw
materials for the multisound — that means using the
sampling, creating, and editing functions that we just
mentioned. Second, we must assign the sounds to
the keyboard and then edit them with the multisound
parameters.
■ in the following sections we will cover these two
aspects of the sound creation process in detail.
These sections are "2. M A K IN G T H E R A W M A T E R I

R eading these will give you more of an idea of the
possibilities for sound synthesis with this instrument.
• Two groups of tasks involved in making a multisound:
i) A s its name implies, a multisound is made up of
several individual sounds.
/ These sounds can be made by first sampling or
\ creating new waveforms and then editing them.
