Notes on control unit diagnosis

KTS modules are supplied with power either by way of
the power supply unit provided or via the OBD interface
in the vehicle.
!
If a test step involves starting the engine, the battery
voltage may drop to such an extent that supply via
the vehicle is no longer guaranteed. In such cases it
may be necessary to run the KTS modules by way of
the power supply unit.
i
On some vehicles, the ignition must be switched on
for power to be supplied via the OBD interface.
Connection to the diagnostic interface in the vehicle is
made by way of:
R
The OBD diagnostic cable (fig. 3, item 3), or
R
the OBD diagnostics cable and the UNI connecting
cable (fig. 3, item 2) or
R
the OBD diagnostic cable and additionally a vehi-
cle-specific adapter cable (special accessory).
!
Make sure the OBD diagnostic cable is properly
connected to the KTS modules. Incorrect connection
could cause the pins of the plug to bend or break
off. Only use the OBD diagnostic cable contained in
the scope of delivery.

Notes on control unit diagnosis can be found in the
Online Help for the diagnosis software.

Notes concerning the multimeter
and oscilloscope
Danger due to high voltage!
There is a risk of potentially fatal voltage if
measurements are taken without a ground
cable.
If no diagnosis cable is connected, a
ground connection is to be made from
the KTS modules before making any V-, R- or
I-measurements (fig. 1, item 2) made con-
nection to vehicle ground with the ground
cable provided.
Connect the ground cable as close as possi-
ble to the object to be measured.
Use KTS modules only on the vehicle and
not for measuring voltage > 60 VDC, 30 VAC
or 42 VACpeak. Do not perform any mea-
surements on ignition systems.
Only use the measurement cables provided
(with contact protection).
Always plug measurement cables into the
KTS modules first and then into the vehicle.
Do not lay unshielded measurement cables
close to sources of major interference such
as ignition cables.
!
To prevent KTS 570 failure, measurement input
CH1(–) must be connected with vehicle ground
before menu item "Oscilloscope" is opened. In menu
item "Oscilloscope", measurement input CH1(–) and
measurement input Ground are connected internally
(non-floating measurement, see chap. 7.4).

Firmware update

After an update of ESI[tronic] 2.0, the firmware of the
TTS modules is updated automatically when the con-
troller diagnosis is started.
To update the firmware, the KTS module is to be sup-
plied with voltage from the power supply unit provided
and connected to a PC/laptop by way of the USB con-
nection cable. Do not interrupt the USB connection
during the firmware update. The firmware update can
also be done using DDC (Diagnostic Device Configura-
tion) (see online help on DDC).
!
For the KTS 540 / 570, firmware updates must al-
ways be performed using the USB connection cable
(not by way of Bluetooth).
