The smoothing roller is a countermeasure against damage to the belt
caused by the edges of small sizes of thick paper.

The smoothing roller polishes the surface of the fusing belt in order to
remove roughness caused by paper edges and to prevent glossy streaks
on prints.

The smoothing roller rotates at a different speed to the fusing belt, in
order to improve the smoothing.
