LTO-8 Type M Format

Bar Code Labels

QuantumLTO-8 HH SAS User's Guide
LTO-8 introduces a new media formatting option, the M format. The M
format is used with LTO-8 tape drives and LTO-7 media. When LTO-7
media is M formatted by an LTO-8 tape drive, the data capacity of the
LTO-7 media is 9TB native, compared to 6TB of a standard formatted
LTO-7 tape. The LTO-7 media must be unused. After M formatting, the
media cannot be used in an LTO-7 drive.
A new bar code media identifier is used with M formatted LTO-7 tapes.
The last two characters of the bar code are "M8". Quantum strongly
recommends that M formatted media are labelled with M8 bar code
labels.
A bar code label contains:
• A volume serial number (VOLSER) that is human-readable
• A bar code that the library can read
• Bar codes should be cartridge generation specific, i.e. an LTO8 tape
should have a barcode with an L8 suffix.
Note: LTO7 tapes formatted to the M8 format should have a
Barcode with an M8 suffix.
Note: The tape drive does not require bar code labels, but you may
choose to use labels for tape cartridge identification purposes.
When attaching a bar code label to a tape cartridge, place the label only
in the recessed label area (see 5 in
extends outside of the recessed area can cause loading problems in the
drive.
