4-10 LIFT CYLINDER OPERATION (FOLDING MODELS)

4-11 CHISEL PLOWING

4-11.1 General
a. The chisel plow loosens the soil to the de-
sired depth, allowing water penetration into
the soil. During the winter, the ground will
freeze deeper and "weather out" much faster.
b. Chisel plowing leaves a mulch and residue
cover on the surface, preventing soil surface
sealing. Water will be absorbed quickly into
the soil, reducing runoff, evaporation and soil
erosion. The residue cover also reduces wind
erosion.
4-11.2 Operating Tips
a. To retard downhill water movement on
slopes, start at the bottom of the slope and
work upwards, parallel to the bottom.

4-12 DISC CUTTER OPERATION

4-10.1 The master lift cylinder and wing slave cyl-
inders should extend and retract equally to
maintain the same depth. To ensure equal
stroke length, occasionally hold the tractor
depth control lever in raise position for a few
seconds after raising the implement.
Note: The procedure can be conveniently
performed when the implement is raised
while making a turn.
b. Chisel the field at an angle to the rows to
break up the ridges.
4-11.3 Operating Speed
a. The chisel works best when operated at a
relatively fast speed; 5 mph or faster. If field
conditions are adverse, operate at a slower
speed to reduce the possibility of implement
damage.
b. If field conditions are too rough to operate at
high speed at the desired depth, make two
passes at an angle to each other. Make the
first pass shallower than the second pass.
4-11.4 Turning Corners

RAISE CHISEL SHANKS AND DISC CUTTERS
OUT OF GROUND. SHARP TURNS APPLY EX-
TREME SIDE LOADS ON SHANKS, DISC CUT-
TERS AND FRAME MEMBERS, AND CAN
CAUSE SERIOUS IMPLEMENT DAMAGE.
4-12.1 General
a. The disc cutters are used for cutting stalks
and residue. If stalk and residue cutting is not
required, fully raise the disc frame and use
the implement solely as a chisel plow.
Note: It is not necessary to raise disc cutter
frame when raising main frame to turn corners.
