Table 6. Detector-related problems (Sheet 3 of 4)
Symptom
Excessive baseline drift
No peaks, or peaks
much smaller than
expected
Broad, tailing peaks
Detector failing to
power up
Detector not running
upon injection
Thermo Scientific
Cause
Flowcell contaminated
Mobile phase contamination
Material bleeding from the column
Leaks in system or flowcell
Tiny bubble trapped in the flowcell
Excessive temperature fluctuations
Lamp not on or defective
Integrator input voltage not
matching output voltage
Insufficient sample reaching the
detector
Excessive rise time
Poor connection at flowcell inlet
Tripped circuit breaker at power
outlet
Blown detector fuse
Incorrect voltage
Power cord not connected
Detector not receiving Start signal
Solution
Flush the flowcell with cleaning solvents as described
in
"Flushing the Flowcell"
leaks.
Replace the mobile phase with fresh mobile phase
made with high-purity solvents.
Clean or replace the column.
Check all of the fittings for leaks. Call a Thermo
Fisher Scientific field service engineer to replace the
flowcell.
Increase the flow rate until the bubble is removed.
Connect a backpressure device to the flowcell outlet
(and check backpressure rating to avoid rupturing the
flowcell).
Remove the system from drafts. Thermostatically
control the column temperature.
Make sure the lamp is on. Run the detector
diagnostic tests to check the lamp. Call a Thermo
Fisher Scientific field service engineer to replace the
lamp.
Verify that the integrator is connected to the
appropriate analog output connections on the
detector. Check the attenuation setting on the
integrator.
Check the entire system for leaks. Verify the sample
injection volume.
Lower the rise time selection.
Check the end of the inlet tubing for a clean, flat
surface, free of obstructions.
Reset the circuit breaker.
Replace the fuse. See
"Replacing the Fuses"
page
26.
Verify that the line voltage is within the specified
range as listed in
"Specifications"
Connect the power cord.
Check the connection to the Run contacts on the
back panel.
