Appendix A
Read this section to understand the scanner safety and local controls of Precision
Platform 4000-01 Scanners. This section also gives you brief understanding of operator
controls and indicators.
System Overview
Features and Benefits of Precision Platform 4000-01 scanners
The Precision Platform 4000-01 series scanners include a four- or six-sensor
PrecisionPak sensor enclosure and either an integrated Precision Measurement Processor
(PMP), a remote PMP, or a direct interface to existing MXOpen systems, depending on the
exact model. All Precision Platform 4000-01 series scanners span the process with rigid
box-beams, welded to monolithic U-beam end-columns to provide a rock-solid
measurement platform. The optional Thermal Equalization System (TES) represents one of
the most important subsystems of the internal-environment control for the scanner frame.
The TES maintains uniform beam temperatures, helping to ensure stable beam
dimensions regardless of variations in process and mill temperatures.
Ensuring Radiation Safety
Most scanners include nuclear sensors and/or X-ray or laser sensors that take
measurements by directing beta particles, X-rays, or laser beams at and through the sheet.
The scanner design includes rigorous safety features to prevent or detect unsafe
conditions. Shutter status lights that continuously indicate the shutter status of nuclear
and/or X-ray sensors are part of the radiation safety features incorporated into the system.

Precision Platform 4000-01 Series Scanner Components
The Precision Platform 4000-01 Scanner, shown in Figure 148 and scanner 4000-20
shown Figure 149, is comprised of the following:
•
The scanner frame, which supports the heads as they scan
•
A pair of PrecisionPak4 or PrecisionPak6 heads that house the following elements
Sensors that measure sheet characteristics
Electronics that control the internal/external environment for the stability of the
sensor operation
•
A drive motor and belts to move the heads along the scanner frame
•
Switches and diagnostic displays to control and monitor scanner frame and head
functions
