Introduction to Message Sets

In this chapter, you will read about the different message sets from which
you can choose for sending and receiving messages between your host
device and the 1779-KFM interface for communication across the Data
Highway II network. The message sets available to you depend upon
which communication mode you selected using the switches on the host
board (Chapter 4).
The Data Highway II network provides you with five message sets:
Data Highway
Time-Critical
Remote Command Control
Packet Assembler/Disassembler (PAD)
Station Management
We present each message set in its own chapter. Each message set has
unique fields you must supply to send a message from the host device to
the 1779-KFM interface. Once you know what message set you want to
use, you can simply turn to the chapter that describes it.
If you configured the 1779-KFM interface for Native mode, you can use
all of the message sets we describe in Chapters 8 through 12.
If you configured the 1779-KFM interface for PAD mode, you can use a
limited set of messages that we describe in Chapter 11.
Data Highway Message Set
You can send and receive Data Highway messages between your host
device and the 1779-KFM interface only if you select the Native mode.
This message set includes the messages available on the Data Highway
network. For example, you use these messages to read from and write to
the data tables of programmable controllers. This message set also
includes many new messages that provide additional functions.
The Data Highway message set is described in Chapter 8.
