MINIMUM CLEARANCES TO COMBUSTIBLES

Floor Protection /Hearth ExtensionThe appliance should be installed on top of a fully supported
base extending the full width and depth of the unit. The appliance may be located on or near con-
ventional construction materials or raised on a platform of an appropriate height. If installed on
combustible materials, such as carpeting, vinyl tile, etc., a hard surface covering the full width and
depth of the fi leplace base must be installed (i.e. acceptable materials include fl at wood, plywood,
particle board, metal or other hard surfaces). A hearth extension is not required (if used, do not
block the control compartment access panel). Any hearth extension used is for appearance only
and does not have to conform to standard hearth extension installation requirements.
Floor Support
Most installations require no special fl oor support. Check local code to determine if any additional
support is required for intended installation(see following):
Estimate the total weight of the fi replace system and surround materials including brick, stone,
etc. to be installed. Measure the square footage of the fl oor space to be occupied by the system,
surrounds and hearth extensions. Note the fl oor construction, i.e. 2 x 6's, 2 x 8's or 2 x 10's,
single or double joists, type and thickness of fl oor boards. Use this information and consult
your local building code to determine if you need additional support. If you plan to raise the
fi replace and hearth extension, build the platform assembly, then position fi replace and hearth
extension on top. Secure the platform to the fl oor to prevent possible shifting.
Wall Finishes / Surrounds / Mantels
f i r e - p a r t s . c o m
Note: Combustible wall fi nish materials and/or surround materials must not be allowed to encroach
the area defi ned by the appliance front face (black sheet metal). Never allow combustible materials
to be positioned in front of or overlapping the appliance front face. See Figure 35.
Non-combustible materials, such as surrounds and other appliance trim, may be installed on the
appliance front face with the following exception: The material must NOT cover any portion of
the glass or louvers.
Vertical installation clearances to combustible mantels vary according to the depth of the mantel.
(See Figure 5). Mantels constructed of non-combustible materials may be installed at any height
above the appliance opening; however, do not allow anything to hang below the hood.
These instructions should be used as a guideline and do not supersede local codes in any way.
