Many of these operations can be dangerous or deadly if performed incorrectly. The instructions in this section are written with the understanding that the operator has the necessary knowledge and skills to operate this machine.
Model W1701W (For Machines Mfd. Since 1/16) Cutters.vs..Router.Bits When shipped, the Model W1701W is set up for using shaper cutters. However, if you plan on using router bits, you must first convert the Model W1701W to a router table. To convert your shaper to a router table, refer to Page.38.

Spindle.Direction IMPORTANT: Always check the direction of the cutter rota- tion before any cutting operation. The W1701W is equipped with a FWD/REV (forward and reverse) switch, as shown in Figure 20. In most cases, the Spindle shaper should be run in the FWD direction. If you are using Height router bits, always run the shaper in the FWD direction.

The Model W1701W can still use shaper cutters without removing table spacers, but you may not be able to use full profile of all cutters with table in this position.

Replacement If a spindle bearing fails, your shaper will probably develop a noticeable rumble, which will increase when the machine is put under load. If allowed to get worse, overheating of the journal containing the bad bearing could occur, which may cause the bearing to seize and possibly damage other parts of the machine.
