Notes on child restraint systems

Accident statistics show that children
secured in the rear seats are safer than chil-
dren secured in front-passenger seats. For
this reason, smart strongly advises that you
install a child restraint system on a rear seat.
If it is absolutely necessary that you secure a
child in a child restraint system on the front-
passenger seat, always observe the informa-
tion on "Disabling the front-passenger front
Y
airbag" (
page 43).
You avoid risks when you:
enable or disable the front-passenger
R
front airbag correctly.
position the child restraint system favour-
R
ably.
A warning notice is located on the front-
passenger sun visor.
G
WARNING
If you secure a child in a child restraint
system on the front-passenger seat and
the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp
is off, the front-passenger front airbag can
deploy in the event of an accident. The
child could be struck by the airbag. This
Children in the vehicle
poses an increased risk of injury or even
fatal injury.
Make sure that the front-passenger front
airbag has been disabled. The PASSENGER
AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp must be lit.
NEVER use a rearward-facing child
restraint on a seat protected by an ACTIVE
AIRBAG in front of it; DEATH or SERIOUS
INJURY to the child can occur.
Always observe the notes on transporting
Y
children safely (
page 40).

restraint system
If it is absolutely necessary to secure a child
in a rearward-facing child restraint system
on the co-driver's seat, you must always

Y
continuously (
page 39).
When using a child restraint system on the
co-driver's seat you must observe the fol-
lowing:
Move the co-driver's seat as far back as
R
possible.
The base of the child restraint system must
R
lie fully on the co-driver's seat cushion.
The backrest of a forwards-facing child
R
restraint system must, as far as possible,
rest on the backrest of the co-driver's seat.
The child restraint system must not touch
the roof or be subjected to a load by the
head restraint.
