be damaged.

sion, the transmission is locked in posi-
tion P after disconnecting the battery.
The vehicle is secured against rolling
away. You can then no longer move the
vehicle.
The battery and the cover of the positive
terminal clamp must be fitted securely
during operation.

Do not make any attempt to start the
vehicle if the on-board voltage is low (e.g.
weak lighting) or 3 is shown in the dis-
play. A starting attempt could damage the
batteries if they are cold or not fully
charged.

Avoid repeated and lengthy starting
attempts. Otherwise, the catalytic con-
verter could be damaged by the non-com-
busted fuel.

Environmental note
Batteries contain pollu-
tants. It is illegal to dis-
pose of them with the
household rubbish. They
must be collected sepa-
rately and disposed of in
an environmentally
responsible recycling sys-
tem.
Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally respon-
sible manner. Take dis-
charged batteries to a
qualified specialist work-
shop or to a collection
point for used batteries.
For safety reasons, smart recommends using
only batteries which have been approved for
your vehicle by smart. These batteries pro-
vide increased leakage protection in the
event of an accident.
Comply with the following safety instruc-
tions and protective measures when han-
dling batteries.
WARNING
Fire, naked flames and smoking
are prohibited when handling the
battery. Avoid creating sparks.
Battery acid is caustic. Avoid con-
tact with the skin, eyes or cloth-
ing.
Wear suitable protective clothing;
in particular gloves, an apron and
a face mask.
Immediately rinse acid splashes
off with clean water. Consult a
doctor if necessary.
Wear protective eyewear.
Keep children away.
Observe the operating instruc-
tions.

Jump-starting

When jump-starting, observe the following
rules:
Avoid multiple or lengthy starting

attempts.
Do not use a rapid charging device to start
R
the vehicle.
You may only jump-start the vehicle when
R
the engine and exhaust system are cold.
For jump-starting, use only batteries with
R
a nominal voltage of 12 V.
Only use jump leads that have a sufficient
R
cross-section and insulated terminal
clamps.
If the battery is fully discharged, leave the
R
donor battery connected for a few minutes
