determined by distributing to each axle its
share of the maximum loaded vehicle weight
and dividing by two.
means that the tire was produced in the 22nd
week of 2011. The other numbers are market-
ing codes that may or may not be used by the
tire manufacturer. This information is used to
contact consumers if a tire defect requires a
recall.
Vehicle normalload on the tire
means that load on anïndividual tire that is
determined by distributing to each axle its
share of the curb weight, accessory weight,
and normal occupant weight (distributed in
accordance with table below
c:>page 201)
and dividing by two.
Vehicle maximum load on the tire
tire meets all federal standards. The next two
numbers or letters indicate the plant where it
was manufactured, and the last four numbers
represent the week and year of manufacture.
For example,

Uniform Tire Quality Grading
is a tire information system developed by the
United States National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) that is designed to
help buyers make relative comparisons among
tires. The UTQG is not a safety rating and not a
guarantee that a tire willlast for a prescribed
number of miles or perform in a certain way.
lt
sim ply gives tire buyers additional informa-
tion to combine with other considerations,
su ch as priee, brand loyalty and dealer recom-
mendations. Under UTQG, tires are graded by
the tire manufacturers in three areas: tread-
wear, traction and temperature resistance.
The UTQG information on the tires, molded in-
ta the sidewalls.
U.S. DOT Tire Identification Number (TIN)
Treadwear indicators (TWO
rneans the projections within the principal
grooves designed to give a visual indication of
the degrees ofwear ofthe tread. See
Qpage 207, Tread Wear Indicator (TWI)
for
more information on measuring tire wear.
Tread separation
rneans pulling away of the tread from the tire
carcass.
Tread
rneans that portion of a tire that comes into
contact with the road.
Sidewall
means nominal distance between rim flanges.
means that portion of a tire between the
tread and bead.

Rim size designation
means rim diameter and width.

Reinforced tire
means a tire designed ta operate at higher
loads and at higher inflation pressures than
the corresponding standard tire. Reinforced
tires may be identified as "XL" , "xl", "EXTRA
LOAD", or "RF" on the sidewall.
means a metal support for a tire or a tire and
tube assembly upon which the tire beads are
seated.

Normal occupant weight
means ISO lbs. (68 kilograms) times the
number of occupants seated in the vehicle up
ta the total seating capacity ofyour vehicle.
Overall width

ta which a tire may be inflated. Also called
"maximum inflation pressure."
means the linear distance between the exteri-
ors of the sidewalls of an inflated tire, includ-
ing elevations due ta labeling, decorations, or
protective bands or ribs.
means a layer of rubber-coated parallel cards.
