Instruments and warning/indicator lights
Instruments and warning/indicator lights

in critical situations. You must allow for
increased braking distances. The extra
distance used up by fading brakes could
lead to an accident.

Safety systems
The. (USA models)

(Canada models) in-
dicator light monitors the safety systems e.g.
airbags, pretensioners and illuminates for a
few seconds each time you switch the ignition
on.
If the. (USA models)

(Canada models)
indicator light does not go out, or if it illumi-
nates while you are driving, or if it starts to
blink, then there is a malfunction somewhere
in the system. If the light does not illuminate
when you switch on the ignition, this also
means there is a malfunction.

WARNING
Ifyou have a malfunction in the safety sys-
tems, contact your authorized Audi dealer
immediately. Otherwise the
saf~ty
sys-
tems may not work properly in an acci-
dent.

Safety belt warning Iight
Applies ta vehicles: with safety belt warning light
The warning tight is a reminder
to
fasten
safety belts.
The warning light. comes on for a few sec-
onds after the ignition is switched on as a re-
minder to fasten your safety belt.

Generator
This warning/indicator tight detects a mal-
function in the generator or in the vehicle's
electrical system.
The. warning/indicator light illuminates
when you switch on the ignition and must go
out after the engine has started.
Ifthe. warning/indicator light illuminates
while you are driving, you should contact your
authorized Audi dealer. Since the vehicle bat-
tery is discharging, you should switch off any
unnecessary electrical consumers (for exam-
ple, the air conditioner).

Engine oil pressure

The red engine ail pressure warning symbol
requires immediate service or repair.
If t h e . symbol appears in the display and
flashes, the oil pressure is too low. In addition
to the symbol, the following message also ap-
pears in the display:
Switch off engine! Oil pressure is too low

Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
~
Shut the engine down.
~

sistance if necessary.
Engine oillevel too low
If the engine oillevel is too low, top off oil to
the proper level

Engine oillevel OK
If t h e . symbol starts flashing again even
though the engine oillevel checks OK on the
dipstick, do not start driving again and do
not let the engine run at..ldle. Instead, con-
tact your authorized Audi des,ler for assis-
tance.

Tips
- The engine oil pressure symbol. is
not an indicator for a low engine oillev-
el. Do not rely on it. Instead, check the
oillevel in your engine at regular inter-
vals, preferably each time you refuel,
and always before going on a long trip.
- The yellow oillevel warning indication
III
requires oil refill or workshop serv-
ice without delay. Do not wait until the
red oil pressure warning symbol.

Engine cooling system
A malfunction in the engine cooting system
must be repaired as saon as possible.
When the. symbol in the display flashes,
then either the engine coolant
temperature
is
too high, or the coolant
level
is too low. In ad-
dition to the symbol, the.following message
also appears in the display:
Switch off engine and check coolant level

Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
~
Turn off the engine.
~
Check coolant level

Add coolant if necessary

Continue driving only after the engine cool-
ant warning/indicator light goes out.

Contact your authorized Audi dealer for as-
sistance if necessary.
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the
radiatorfan may be the cause ofthe malfunc-
tion.

fan belt may be damaged.

WARNING

- If your vehicle should break down for
mechanical or other reasons, park at a
safe distance from moving traffic, turn
off the engine and turn on the hazard

Emergency
flasher

- Never open the hood if you see or hear
steam or coolant escaping from the en-
gine compartment - you risk being scald-
ed. Wait until you can no longer see or
hear steam or coolant escaping.
- The engine compartment of any vehicle
IS
a dangerous area. Before you perform
any work in the engine compartment,
turn off the engine and allow itto cool.

Note
Do not continue driving if the. symbol
illuminates. There is a malfunction in the
engine cooling system - you could damage
your engine.

Electro-mechanical power assist
If the indicator light illuminates while you are
driving, there is a malfunction in the electro-
mechanical steering. If the indicator light is
showing~,
there may be a reduction in pow-
er steering assist. If the indicator light is
. showing . , there may be a totalloss of pow-
er steering assist. The steering must be in-
spected immediately bya qualified workshop

With the engine not running (e.g. when
the car is being towed), there is also no power
assist available.

WARNING
Ifthere is a malfunction, the indicator
light for the electro-mechanical power as- .
sist illuminates. Seek professional assis-
tance.

Clutch pedal
Applies ta vehicles: with manual transmission
The indicator light
~
illuminates if you do
not press the clutch pedal when starting the
engine. For safety reasons, the engine will on-
ly start when the clutch pedal is pressed.

Electronic stabilization program
(ESP)
If the
Dl
indicator lamp blinks while driving,
the ESP or ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation) is active-
ly regulating.
If the
Ji]
indicator lamp illuminates, the sys-
tem has switched the ESP off. In this case, you
can switch the ignition off and then on to
switch the ESP on again. The system is func-
tioning completely when the indicator lamp
switches off.
