PH4 Sensor Adjustment

8-6-1
PH4 is an Omron E3S-R61 Photo-electric switch which uses polarized light to detect the presence
of a tube in a rack. This sensor contains an adjust screw and a Green and Red LED to set this tube
detect adjustment (see Figure 8-5 and Table 8-1). PH4 must correctly detect tubes at the pipette
sampling position. To adjust PH4:
1.
Hold down on the red and green switches while turning on the Rack Sample Handler to enter the Service
Test Mode. When display indicates 揝ervice Test,?press ENT, then press Menu until display states 揥ith
Tube Run.? Then press ENT and press UP once. When rack advances a tube to the pipette sampling
position, press STOP.
See pages 7.2 to 7.11 for more Service Mode information.
2.
Go into Sensor Monitor routine. With the customer抯 tube in a rack in front of PH4, the upper left number
on the display must be 1 (see page 7.8). The Green LED on PH4 must be ON and Red LED must be
OFF. If all three conditions are met, go to step 6. If not, go on to step 3.
3.
Turn off Clinitek Atlas and Rack Sample Handler Units. Remove the Rack Sample Handler unit from the
Clinitek Atlas unit and place it on a level and stable surface. Remove the handler Sensor Cover (one M3
x 6 screw, see items 1 and 6 on page 10.52). Place a rack with sample tubes used by the customer into
the Transfer Plate Infeed section.
4.
PH4 uses a white acrylic Reflection Plate (see item 2, page 10.4) to reflect the polarized light back to PH4.

Verify reflectance plate is secure and is without scratches. Wipe the reflector plate with a clean cloth until it
is clean.
5.
Remove the tube in the rack sample position. Turn PH4抯 adjust screw fully counter-clockwise until it
makes a 揷licking?sound, then turn it clockwise until the Red LED just turns ON: note this Red LED ON
揷onfirmed?position! Then turn the screw clockwise until the pointer is at a mid-point between the
onfirmed?position and the far clockwise position.
6.
Run With Tube Run in Service Mode and verify the rack stops for 3 seconds to sample each tube present
in a rack and otherwise fast advances the rack. Use tubes that are clear, scratched, empty and filled with
urine, confirming that only the Green LED turns on during a tube detect. If Green LED
tube detect, turn adjust screw 1/8 to 1/4 turn clockwise more and test instrument again.
Note this procedure works best when the 揷onfirmed?position (Red LED just turns ON) of the red pointer is
between the 3/4 point and the far clockwise position. If it is not in this range, adjust screw using step 6 above.
