6.
Remove Takeup Reel (Figure 1 item 112) by removing its set screw (item 111).
7.
Remove Preamp PC Board (item 6, page 10.30). Use proper static handling procedures to do this
remove/ since static electricity can damage components on this board!
8.
Remove Split Clamp (Figure 1 item 105), Spur Gear (item 106) and Large Spur Gear (item 104).
9.
Place Drill Template Fixture onto the Right Side Wall of the Frame Assembly (see Figure 2). Line up
the bottom of the fixture with the bottom edge of the instrument Right Side Wall. Then line up the
front side of the fixture with the front edge of the instrument Right Side Wall. See Figure 2: be sure
fixture is aligned with frame bottom and front before drilling holes! Hold fixture in place and punch
four marks onto wall through fixture holes using the .250 Transfer Punch from the kit.
10. Cover the Readhead (item 62, page 10.6), Storage Module (Figure 1 item 134), fiber optics and
Sample Handler-to-Atlas Connector by placing several clean rags over them.
11. Using a power drill with a Number 3 (or 3mm) size Center Drill Bit, drill four starter holes as shown in
Figure 2.
12. Using a power drill with a Letter H .266 inch (as close to 6.75mm as possible) size drill bit, complete
the drilling of the four holes in frame. Clean out and smooth the hole surfaces using a counter-sink
on the power drill or a file. Remove all aluminum filings from the unit.
13. Install the Drive Shaft Assembly (Figure 4 item 2) onto unit where the Large Spur Gear was. Apply
Loctite 222 (or an equivalent non-permanent thread locking compound) to Timing Pulley set screw
threads (Figure 4 item 1) and install Timing Pulley onto the Drive Shaft Assembly (see Figure 4). Gap
Timing Pulley 0.020 inch (0.5mm) away from the Frame. Re-install Spur Gear and Split Clamp.
Push and pull on Drive Shaft Assembly and rotate it to verify there is no interference between the
Split Clamp and Drive Shaft Assembly.
14. Using a feeler gauge, verify a gap of 0.038 +/- .005 inch (0.96mm +/- 0.13mm) exists between the
Timing Pulley and the Bearing Holder in the Bolt-On Takeup Reel Assembly (see picture of this in
Figure 3).
15. Place Spacer Plate (Figure 4 item 3) against the instrument's inside right wall (see Figure 5). Align
edge of plate with the front edge of the right wall frame as close as possible (see Figure 5). Place
Mounting Bracket (see Figure 3 item 13) on top of this Spacer Plate and attach both parts to the
frame using the four 1/4 inch diameter screws, lockwashers and washers in kit.
