Cause
The drum units are near the end
of their life.
The drum unit for the color
indicated on the LCD is near the
end of its life.
The temperature of fuser unit
does not rise at a specified
temperature within specified time.
The fuser unit is too hot.
The machine has a mechanical
problem.
The paper is jammed inside the
machine.
The paper is jammed in the back
of the machine.
The paper is jammed in the paper
tray of the machine.
The belt unit is not installed
correctly.
The machine is out of paper or
paper is not correctly loaded in
the paper tray.
The number you dialled does not
answer or is busy.
The toner cartridge or the drum
unit and toner cartridge assembly
is not installed correctly.
The waste toner box is not
installed correctly.
Troubleshooting and routine maintenance
Action
Buy new drum units before you get a
Replace Drums message.
Buy new drum unit for the color indicated on
the LCD before you get a
1
message.
Replace Drum(X)
Turn the power switch off, wait a few
seconds, and then turn it on again. Leave the
machine for 15 minutes with the power on.
The machine can be turned off for up to 60
hours without losing faxes stored in the
memory. (See Transferring your faxes or Fax
Journal report on page 143.)
Disconnect the machine from the power
for several minutes, then reconnect it.

If the problem continues, call Brother
Customer Service.

Re-install the belt unit. (See Replacing the
belt unit on page 172.)
Do one of the following:
Refill the paper in the paper tray and
press Mono Start or Color Start or put
the paper in the manual feed slot.
Remove the paper and load it again.
Then press press Mono Start or
Color Start.
If the problem is not solved, the paper
pick-up roller may be stained. Clean the
paper pickup roller. (See Cleaning the
paper pick-up rollers on page 159.)
Verify the number and try again.
Re-install the toner cartridge or the drum unit
that is indicated on the LCD.
Re-install the waste toner box. (See
Replacing the waste toner box on page 176.)
