Chain s aw o perating i nstructions
For assembly follow the procedure in the appropriate
section " Mounting G uide B ar a nd C hain" o f t his m anual.

WARNING!
Proper tension of the chain is extremely important. In
order to avoid false setting the tensioning procedure
must b e f ollowed a s d escribed i n t his m anual. A lways
make sure the hexagonal nut(s) for the sprocket
guard is (are) tightened securely after tensioning
the chain. Check chain tension once more after
having tightened the nuts and thereafter at regular
intervals ( always b efore s tarting t o w ork). I f t he c hain
becomes l oose w hile c utting, s hut o ff t he e ngine a nd
then tighten. Never try to tighten the chain while the
engine is running!
Fueling
Your M AKITA s aw u ses o n o il-­gasoline m ixture f or f uel
(see c hapter " Fuel" o f t his m anual).
WARNING!
Gasoline i s a n e xtremely fl ammable f uel. U se e x-­
treme caution when handling gasoline or fuel mix.
Do not smoke or bring any sparks or flame near
the f uel ( fig. 5 ).
Fueling i nstructions
Fuel your chain saw in well ventilated areas or out-­
doors. A lways s hut o ff t he e ngine a nd a llow i t t o c ool
before refueling. Select bare ground for fueling and
move the chain saw at least 10 feet (3 m) from fueling
spot b efore s tarting t he e ngine ( fig. 5 a).

Wipe o ff a ny s pilled f uel b efore s tarting y our s aw a nd
check for leakage.
Check for fuel leakage while refueling and during op-­
eration. If fuel or oil leakage is found, do not start or run
the e ngine u ntil l eak i s fi xed a nd s pilled f uel h as b een
wiped a way. C lothing w ith f uel o n i t h as t o b e c hanged
immediately (this is a danger to your life!).
Avoid skin contact with fuel. Never loosen or remove the
cap of the fuel tank while the engine is running.
Starting
Do n ot d rop s tart. T his m ethod i s v ery d angerous b e-­
cause y ou m ay l ose c ontrol o f t he s aw ( fig. 6 ).

in a n o pen a rea. M aintain a g ood b alance a nd s ecure
footing. Place your right foot through the rear handle
opening a nd fi rmly g rasp t he f ront h andle w ith y our l eft
hand ( fig. 6 a).
Be a bsolutely s ure t hat g uide b ar a nd c hain a re c lear o f
you o r a ll o ther o bstructions a nd o bjects, i ncluding t he
ground, b ecause w hen t he e ngine s tarts i n s emi-­throttle
position, e ngine s peed w ill b e f ast e nough f or t he c lutch
to engage the sprocket and turn the chain which may
cause a k ickback.
Never attempt to start the saw when the guide bar is
in a cut or kerf.
When you pull the starter grip, don't wrap the starter
rope around your hands. Do not allow the grip to snap
back, b ut g uide t he s tarter r ope s lowly b ack t o p ermit t he
rope to rewind properly. Failure to follow this procedure
may r esult i n i njury t o h and o r fi ngers a nd m ay d amage
the starter mechanism.
