3.5.2 Troubleshooting by Symptoms

This section explains about troubleshooting for typical troubles relating to the scanner/
ADF sections.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Remedy
(p.287)
Clean the reflecting light receiving
window on the carriage removing
dust or any foreign material on it. If
the foreign materials are inside the
carriage and cannot be removed,
replace the carriage itself.
Clean the ADF scanning window
located beside the document table
and remove dust or any foreign
material on it. If the foreign
materials are inside the carriage and
cannot be removed, replace the
carriage itself.
Clean the document glass surface
(both front and back side) and
remove the foreign materials.
Check the panel settings below and
change them according to the paper
characteristics.
• Document type
• Density
• Contrast
• R/G/B

Scanner/ADF Section
SCANNER/ADF SECTION DOES NOT OPERATE
Possible parts that caused the error

HP detection plate

Carriage motor
Troubleshooting
Start the "MFP Maintenance mode", and perform "Self diagnosis" -
"Scanner" to see if there are any problems with the listed items below.
Step Point to be checked
Warm up operation
The possible cause of this error may be fluorescent lamp trouble

failure
and the steps below should be followed.
Is "NG" displayed
1. Confirm if CN702 connector on the main board is connected
beside "Warm up:"?
properly (reconnect the cable as necessary).
2. Confirm if the FFC cable is connected to the CCD sensor
board on the carriage unit properly (reconnect the cable as
necessary).
Origin correction
The possible cause of this error may be home position detection

failure
trouble and the steps below should be followed.
Is "NG" displayed
1. Confirm if there are any problems with the HP detection board
beside "Correct:"?
that is mounted on the HP side of the scanner unit lower case
(displacement, damage), and replace the HP detection board if a
defect is found .
2. Confirm if the cable is connected to the HP sensor board on the
carriage unit properly (reconnect the cable as necessary).
3. Confirm if CN701 connector on the main board is connected
properly (reconnect the cable as necessary)*.
Scanner carriage
The possible cause of this error may be carriage motor operation

motor driving failure
trouble and the steps below should be followed.
Is "NG" displayed
1. Confirm if the timing belt is strained correctly as well as the
beside "Motor:"?
carriage moves smoothly (Fix them as necessary)
2. Confirm if CN703 connector on the main board is connected
properly (reconnect the cable as necessary).
3. Confirm if there are any problems with the carriage motor
(replace the motor if a defect is found) Motor coil resistance
value: 10.9Ω ± 7% (10.1-11.7 Ω).
Note *:
If CN701 connection failure occurs, "NG" is displayed for "Motor:". (Due to the
connection failure, the carriage motor does not operate, and the carriage cannot
move and failed to detect its home position during HP seek operation. As a result, the
malfunction is judged as motor failure.)
