HOW-TO SECTION
6. Prime the fuel system using
the hand primer on the fuel
filter/water separator. Pump until
resistance is felt.
Draining the Fuel Filter/Water
Separator
The fuel filter/water separator has a
built in water in fuel sensor signaling
when the separator requires draining.
The sensor will turn on a dash light.
Do the following to drain the water
from the fuel filter/water separator:
1. Place the end of the fuel
filter/water separator drain hose
into a suitable container
2. Open the water drain and drain
filter until only clear fuel is
viewed.
Engine Out of Fuel — How
to Restart
When an engine has run out of fuel,
there is a definite procedure to follow
when restarting it.
1. If the engine is equipped with a
hand priming pump located on
the fuel filter module, operate the
priming pump for two to three
minutes or until resistance is felt.
2. If the engine is equipped with
only a priming port located on
the fuel filter module, have an

authorized repair facility prime
the fuel system.
3. Crank the engine for 30 seconds
at a time, but no longer. Before
cranking the engine again, wait
at least two minutes. The engine
should start within four 30 second
attempts.
4. If the engine fails to start, ensure
the vehicle has adequate fuel and
the fuel system is not leaking
externally.
5. If problem persists, call an
authorized repair facility.
NOTICE:
The starting motor and fuel pump
should never be used to prime the
fuel filters. Prolonged used of the
starting motor and fuel pump to
prime the fuel system can result in
damage to the starter, fuel pump
and injectors and cause erratic
running of the engine due to the
amount of air in the fuel lines and
filters.
