OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR STARTING THE ENGINE
Authorized Detroit Diesel service
outlets are properly equipped and have
the trained technicians to perform this
service.
Priming is not normally required if
the filter elements are filled with clean
fuel when installed and the lines are
not drained of fuel. If priming is
required refer to section Priming the
Fuel System
If the engine is equipped with a
fuel/water separator, drain off any
water that has accumulated. Water
in fuel can seriously affect engine
performance and may cause engine
damage. Detroit Diesel recommends
installation of a fuel/water separator
wherever water contamination is a
concern.
Adding Fuel — Note the following
when adding fuel:
□ Add winter or summer grade fuel
according to the season of the
year.
□ Work in the cleanest conditions
possible.
□ Prevent water from entering the
fuel tank.
For further information refer to
"Diesel Fuels" in the HOW-TO
SECTION of this guide.

Priming the Fuel System —
Prime the fuel system as follows:
1. If equipped with a hand pump
on the fuel filter or fuel/water
separator, work the hand pump
until resistance is felt.
2. Crank the engine for 30 seconds
at a time, but no longer. Before
cranking the engine again, wait
at least two minutes. The engine
should start within four 30-second
attempts.
