Problem—The Engine Exhaust Is White
Cause
The fuel is of poor quality.
The intake air preheater is
malfunctioning.
The valves are not adjusted properly.
Problem—The Engine Exhaust Is Black
Cause
The air filter and/or intake air system
is clogged.
The exhaust brake valve is
malfunctioning.
The intake air preheater is
malfunctioning.
The valves are not adjusted properly.
There is damage to the fuel system:
the fuel pump, one or more fuel
injectors, or one or more unit pumps
are damaged.
The charge-air temperature sensor is
damaged.
There is internal damage to the
engine.

Add fuel of the right quality.
Check the intake air preheater, and
replace it, if necessary.
Check the valve lash.
Check the air restriction indicator.
Clean the intake air system and
replace the air filter if necessary.
Have an authorized repair facility
check the operation of the valve.
Check that the heater is not staying on
all of the time.
Check the valve lash.
Bring the vehicle to an authorized
repair facility for service.
