steering reservoir to bring it up to
the required level.
32. Fill the crankcase to the re-
quired level with the proper grade
and type of lubricant.
33. Start the engine and check the
oil pressure at the instrument panel
indicator.
34. Run the engine until normal
operating temperature is indicated
GROUP 8-ENGINE
and perform or check the following
items:
Check for oil, coolant and vacuum
leaks.
Adjust and check the initial and
advance timing.
Perform carburetor idle and fuel
mixture adjustments.
Perform carburetor, accelerator
and transmission linkage adjustments.

MAJOR REPAIR OPERATIONS
To perform the operations in this
section, it will be necessary to re-
move the engine from the car and
install it on a work stand.
CRANKSHAFT
The crankshaft and related parts
are shown in Fig. 61.
REMOVAL
1.
Remove
the
alternator
and
bracket. Remove the spark plugs to
allow easy rotation of the crankshaft.
2.
Disconnect the fuel inlet line
at the carburetor. Remove the fuel
pump and fuel pump push rod. Re-

move the water pump and fan as an
assembly.
3. Remove the crankshaft damper
mounting bolt and washer. Install
the puller on the damper and remove
the damper (Fig. 28). Remove the
Woodruff key.
4. Remove
the
power
steering
pump and reservoir.
5. Remove the cylinder front cover,
timing pointer, oil level dipstick tube
and the cover mounting gasket. Re-
move the crankshaft front oil slinger.
6. Check the timing chain deflec-
tion, following steps 2, 3 and 4 un-
der "Timing Chain, Camshaft and

35. On a car with an air condi-
tioner, check the air conditioner sys-
tem and charge it as necessary.
36. Install the carburetor air clean-
er and duct assembly. Install the hood
assembly and adjust it, if necessary.
Remove the masking tape from the
hood, fender and cowl.
37. Road test the car.

7. Crank the engine until the tim-
ing marks on the sprockets are posi-
tioned as shown in Fig. 31: Remove
the lock plate, fuel pump eccentric,
drive bushing and wear plate. Re-
move the camshaft sprocket and tim-
ing chain as a unit.
8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket
(Fig. 33).
9. Invert the engine on the work
stand. Remove the flywheel. Remove
the oil pan and gasket. Remove the
oil pump.
10. Make sure all bearing caps
(main and connecting rod) are
