Environmental requirements
Chapter 10.
"You can't make a product greener, whether it's a car, a refrigerator, or a city, without
making it smarter: Smarter materials, smarter software, or smarter design."
_ "The Green Road Less Traveled" by Thomas L. Friedman, The New York Times, July 15,
2007
This chapter describes the environmental requirements for IBM z Systems servers. It lists the
dimensions, weights, power, and cooling requirements as an overview of what is needed to
plan for the installation of an IBM z Systems z13s server and IBM z BladeCenter Extension
(zBX).
The IBM z13s server is an air cooled system with front to back airflow. Air temperature,
altitude, and humidity requirements meet the ASHRAE
The physical installation of z13s servers has a number of options, including raised floor and
non-raised floor options, cabling from the bottom of the frame or off the top of the frame, and
the option to have a high-voltage DC power supply directly into the z13s server, instead of the
usual AC power supply.
For comprehensive physical planning information, see z13s Installation Manual for Physical
Planning, GC28-6953.
This chapter includes the following sections:
IBM z13s power and cooling
IBM z13s physical specifications
