Supported Protocols

5.1
Supported Protocols
The ETERNUS DX supports the NFS protocol and the CIFS protocol. These two protocols can be used simultane-
ously and enable file sharing between clients in which different OSs (such as UNIX and Windows) are run-
ning. NFS and CIFS are client/server protocols that can perform file management such as exclusive control on
the NAS side, which allows exclusive control over each file and simultaneous access.
5.1.1

CIFS

Common Internet File Service (CIFS) is a protocol that is used for file sharing in Windows system environ-
ments.
Files on the network can be shared.
5.1.2

NFS

Network File System (NFS) is a protocol that is used for file sharing in Linux or UNIX system environments.
File sharing for NFS can be performed by mounting a shared directory from a client.
5.2

NAS Volume Management

Thin Provisioning Volumes (TPVs) that are virtual volumes are used for NAS.
5.3

User Management

When the ETERNUS DX is used as a file server, access control over shared files is required. If no control is
performed, access from any user is allowed.
If a directory service such as the Active Directory service or the LDAP service is used for access control, user
management and group management can be consolidated.
5.3.1

Active Directory Service

The ETERNUS DX supports authentication by an Active Directory domain controller (user management server)
in a Windows Server.
A directory is stored in a file on the server that is called a domain controller and can be accessed from net-
work applications and services.
Security is maintained by controlling user access through logon authentication and access control over the
objects in the directories. The Active Directory stores user qualification information and access control infor-
mation. Users obtain authentication to log on to the network and privileges to access system resources.
Group accounts can also be created and effective management for user access privileges is available.
5.3.2

LDAP Service

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) is a protocol to access the directory database. The management
of system user authentication can be centralized in the LDAP server.
