Appendix C. Service Processor Setup and Test

Attention: This procedure applies to modems attached to the serial ports (S1 and S2) on the primary I/O
book (location U1.18-P1-H2). It does not affect the operation of the modem attached to the IBM Hardware
Management Console for pSeries (HMC).
The call-out function is normally handled by the Service Focal Point application running on the HMC.
Note: The call-out and surveillance options are disabled in partitioned systems.
For your convenience, an example of a basic service processor setup checklist is included here. Your
setup may include more or fewer of the available features, so you can adjust this checklist for your own
application.
Service Processor Setup Checklist
1. Shut down the managed system, and wait for the OK in the physical operator panel.
2. Open a virtual terminal window on the HMC.
3. Start the service processor menus.
4. Set the system name.
5. Enable Surveillance.
6. Configure call-in/call-out.
7. Attach modems if necessary. If modem attachment is not necessary, proceed to step 8. To attach a
modem, do the following:
a. Exit the service processor menus.
b. Disable the 350 V dc outputs from the Bulk Power Assembly (BPA) by placing the UEPO switch in
the off position.
Attention: With the UEPO off, power is still present within the BPA.
c. Attach the cables and modems.
d. Place the UEPO switch in the on position.
8. Test both of the following:
v Call-In, go to "Testing Call-In" on page 1018
v Call-Out, go to "Testing Call-Out" on page 1018
9. Use the "Save or Restore Hardware Management Policies," in the "Introduction to Tasks and Service
Aids" section of the RS/6000 and Eserver pSeries Diagnostic Information for Multiple Bus Systems to
back up the service processor settings.
Note: This action is strongly recommended to protect the usefulness of the service processor and the
availability of the server.
Your service processor is now ready for use.
