VMware VAAI
vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) are APIs that improve system performance and scalability by using
the storage system resources more effectively. VAAI enhances the integration of the storage virtual infra-
structure, the Distributed Resource Scheduling (DRS) function, and the troubleshooting features for the stor-
age system with VMware.
The ETERNUS DX supports the following features.
Full Copy (XCOPY)
•
This feature allows copying processes to be performed in the ETERNUS DX without the use of a server. The
loads on servers are reduced, which improves system performance.
Block Zeroing
•
When allocating storage areas to create new virtual machines, it is necessary to zero out these storage
areas for the initialization process. Previously, this process was performed on the server side. Performing
this process on the storage system side instead reduces the loads on servers and speeds up the allocation
of capacity for virtual machines.
Hardware Assisted Locking
•
The Hardware Assisted Locking function enables block level control of the ETERNUS DX for exclusion control
in specific storage areas. This substitutes the LUN (logical volume) level control that is implemented in
"VMware vSphere". Enabling access control in a block unit minimizes the storage areas that are to be limi-
ted for access by exclusion control and improves the operational efficiency of virtual machines.

VMware vCenter Server
vCenter linkage
•
Various information of the ETERNUS DX can be displayed on vSphere Web Client by expanding the user
interface of VMware Web Client. Because storage side information is more visualized, integrated manage-
ment of the infrastructure under a virtual environment can be realized and usability can be improved.
