CHARGING SYSTEM
GENERAL
The charging system consists of the alternator and regulator.
Charging system circuits are shown in
Alternator
The alternator consists of two main components:
The rotor which mounts to the engine sprocket shaft.
G
The stator which bolts to the engine crankcase.
G
Voltage Regulator
See
Figure 7-13.
The voltage regulator is a series regulator
with shunt control. The circuit combines the functions of recti-
fying and regulating.
TROUBLESHOOTING
When the charging system fails to charge or does not charge
at a satisfactory rate, make the following recommended
checks.
Battery
Check for a weak or dead battery. See
tery must be fully charged in order to perform any electrical
tests.
Wiring
Check for corroded or loose connections in the charging cir-
cuit. See
Figure 7-16.
Voltage Regulator Inspection
See
Figure 7-13.
The voltage regulator base must have a
clean, tight connection for proper grounding. Check by using
an ohmmeter with one lead on a known good ground, such
as battery ground cable, and the other on the regulator base.
See
Figure 7-14.
Connector plug to stator must be clean and
tight.
