3. ALG Service Settings

ALG (Application Layer Gateway): An application layer gateway (ALG) allows customized
NAT traversal filters to be applied on the gateway to support address and port translation
for certain application layer protocols such as FTP, BitTorrent, SIP, RTSP, file transfer
applications, etc.
In order for these protocols to work through NAT or a firewall, either the application has
to know the address/port number combination that allows incoming packets, or the NAT
has to monitor the control traffic and open port mappings dynamically as required.
Allowed application data can thus be passed through the security checks of the firewall or
NAT that would have otherwise restricted the traffic for not meeting its filter criteria.
Usually allows client applications to use dynamic TCP/ UDP ports to communicate with
the known ports used by the server applications. In the absence of an ALG, either the
ports would get blocked or the network administrator would need to open a large number
of ports in the firewall; which can lead to the additional network vulnerabilities.
In the default ALG settings, the following protocols are enabled. It is recommended to
keep the settings unchanged.
1. FTP
2. TFTP
3. PPTP
4. IPSec
5. L2TP

4. DMZ Settings

The DMZ function is used to allow one computer on the LAN to be exposed to the
Internet for a special-purpose service such as Internet gaming or video conferencing.
DMZ Host IP Address: The IP address of the computer you want to expose.
Enable: Click the checkbox to enable the DMZ host.
IMPORTANT:
When the DMZ host is enabled, the firewall settings of the DMZ host will be disregarded.

5. UPNP Settings

UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) allows the system (Windows Me and Windows XP only) to
configure the device for various Internet applications automatically.
Enable UPnP: Click the checkbox to enable the UPnP.
