Toshiba Pocket PC e830 User's Guide
Setting up the Name Servers screen
Use Name Servers Page to view and edit DNS, Alt DNS, WINS and Alt
WINDS. Tap Start, Settings, Connections, Network Cards, Network
Adapters, IEEE 802.11b WLAN Adapter, then Name Servers.
DNS
Domain Name System (DNS) is a database system that translates
addressed and domain names. For example, the numeric address (such
as 232.245.21.54) becomes something such as cba.com. DNS can also
be used to control Internet email delivery.
WINS
The Toshiba Pocket PC e830W Windows Internet Naming Service
(WINS) has two functions; one is a Microsoft NetBIOS name server that
eliminates the broadcast needed to resolve computer names to IP
addresses by providing a cache or database of translations. The other
functions is to set the IP address of the host PC to function properly with
the ActiveSync network adapter.
Your Toshiba Pocket PC e830W cannot synchronize with
NOTE
your host PC without setting the IP address in WINS.
Alt DNS
Alternative Domain Name System (Alt DNS) is used to substitute for the
main DNS when necessary.
