INTRODUCTION

If you are not familiar with the Internet, read this in-
troduction before registering and setting up your fax
machine for use on the WEB.

What is the Internet?

Internet is a network that consists of many networks
connected to each other using the world wide tele-
communication infrastructure. When you are "on
line" (connected to the Internet), you have access to
all the information displayed on the World Wide Web
(WEB, for short). The information is given on "sites",
created, usually, by those who are releasing the in-
formation for viewing: companies, associations, pub-
lic and private institutions, etc.

What is an Internet address?

Each site has an exclusive address that indicates its
location in the WEB: URL = Uniform Resource Loca-
tor. The address is made up of two parts: the proto-
col and the actual address. The protocol is fixed and
given by the system you are using; the address gen-
erally consists of three parts, separated by ".".
E.g.: www.example.com/item/page.html
where:
"www" = World Wide Web (WEB);
".example" ("dot example)" = name of the site;
".com" ("dot com") = type of site;
".com" usually indicates a company or marketing
firm; ".net" is an Internet service network.
In this example, www.example.com is the WEB site
address; "item" is the name of a directory on this
WEB site and "page.html" is the name of a specific
page in the directory.

What is "e-mail"?

"E-mail" stands for "Electronic Mail" and is similar to
sending a letter using the traditional postal service,
except that instead of using pen and paper, you use
your fax machine to scan the document you wish to
"write" and the telephone line to "send" it.
You can send and receive e-mail to/from anyone
anywhere in the world who is connected to Internet
and has a subscription.
When you subscribe to Internet, you are assigned an
e-mail address which identifies you as a user and
allows other users to send you electronic mail.
e-mail address has the following standard form
yourname@ISPname.com
where the first part identifies you the subscriber and
the second part (after the @) is the Internet Service
Provider to which you subscribe.
,
Note how you can distinguish an Internet ad-
dress from an e-mail address: an e-mail address
ALWAYS contains the "@"("at") symbol.

What is an "Internet Service Provider"

To use on the Internet, you must be connected to an
Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ISP or SERVER
provides the connection to the network and other
services, and allocates storage space for you email
messages.
When you subscribe to the Provider, you will be
given the name and extension (".com", ".net", etc.) of
the Provider in your area.
