Installing hardware options

Hot-plug SAS or SATA hard drive options

The server supports installation of eight hot-plug SAS (serial-attached SCSI) or
SATA (serial ATA) hard drives. Before installing the SAS or SATA hard drives, you
must first install a SAS hard drive cage.
Installing a hot-plug SAS or SATA hard drive
Installation of an optional hot-plug SAS or SATA hard drive requires the following
operations:
Installing the SAS hard drive cage
Determining the proper hard drive installation order
Installing the hot-plug SAS or SATA hard drive
Installing the SAS hard drive cage
NOTE: You must provide a SAS controller before proceeding with the SAS hard drive cage
installation.
1. Power down the server. Refer to "Powering down the server" in Chapter 2,
"Server operations."
2. Remove all hard drives and hard drive blanks. Refer to the "Removing a hard
drive blank" and "Removing a hot-plug SCSI hard drive" sections in this chapter.
3. Extend the server from the rack. Refer to "Extending the server from the rack" in
Chapter 2, "Server operations."
4. Remove the access panel. Refer to "Removing the access panel" in Chapter 2,
"Server operations."
5. Install the SAS or SATA controller. Refer to the directions provided with the
controller for installation instructions.
6. Disconnect all cables from the SCSI backplane, if applicable.
