BM W U niversal Transmitter
The concept
The BM W Universal Transm itter
replaces up to three hand- held trans-
m itters of different devices such as
garage door openers, alarm systems, or
door locking system s. The BM W
Universal Transm itter recognizes and
"learns" the transmitted signal of each
of the original hand- held transmitters.
The signal of an original hand- held
transm itter can be programmed on one
of the three channel keys. Follow ing
that, each of the devices can be actu-
ated w ith the appropriately- programmed
channel key. The indicator lamp flashes
to confirm transmission of the signal.
If the vehicle is sold, the memory of the
channel keys should be cleared as
described on page 117.
During programming and before
every remote actuation of a
program med device by the BM W
Universal Transm itter, check to be sure
that there are no persons, animals or
objects w ithin the actuation range of
the device in order to prevent possible
injuries or dam age. Also, comply w ith
the safety precautions of the original
hand- held transmitter.<
To Canadian residents:
During program m ing, your hand-
held transm itter m ay autom atically stop
transm itting after tw o seconds. This
may not be long enough to program the
BM W Universal Transm itter. If you are
program ming from one of these hand-
held transmitters, the Universal Trans-
mitter's light m ay begin to flash in a
series of double- blinks. If this occurs,
continue to hold the button of the
Universal Transm itter w hile you reacti-
vate your hand- held transm itter. You
may have to repeat this function several
times w hile program m ing.<

page 117.<
Original hand- held transmitter
If this sym bol is present on the
packaging or in the instructions
of the original hand- held trans-
mitter, it m ay be assum ed that this
hand- held transm itter is com patible
w ith the BM W Universal Transm itter.
Checking for the conversion code
To determ ine w hether the original
hand- held transm itter is provided w ith a
conversion- code system , you m ay
either read the instructions for the orig-
inal hand- held transm itter or program a
channel key as described on the next
page (left- hand colum n under
"Program m ing").
Then press and hold the program m ed
channel key of the BM W Universal
Transm itter. If the indicator lam p of the
BM W Universal Transm itter flashes for
tw o seconds and then com es on
steadily, the original hand- held trans-
m itter is provided w ith a conversion-
code system . With a conversion- code
system , program the channel keys as
described on the next page (right- hand
colum n under "Program m ing a hand-
held transm itter w ith conversion code").
