Parking brake

The parking brake is prim arily designed
to prevent the vehicle from rolling w hile
parked. It operates against the rear
w heels.
To engage
The lever engages autom atically and
the "PARKING BRAKE" or "BRAKE" (in
Canada "P") indicator lam p com es on in
the instrum ent cluster in ignition key
position 2. Refer to pages
To release
Pull up slightly on the lever, press the
button and low er the lever.
If, in exceptional circum stances, it
should be necessary to engage
the parking brake w hile the vehicle is in
motion, do not pull it w ith excessive
pressure. Keep your thum b pressed
against the release button w hile care-
fully pulling up the lever to apply
moderate pressure.
Excessive pressure can lead to over-
braking and loss of traction (fishtailing)
at the rear axle.
The brake lam ps do not com e on w hen
the parking brake is applied.
Vehicles w ith manual transm ission:
Alw ays engage the parking brake w hen
parking on slopes and inclined
surfaces. Even placing the lever in
1st gear or reverse m ay not provide
adequate resistance to rolling.
Vehicles w ith autom atic transm ission:
Place the selector lever in "Park."
To avoid corrosion, apply the parking

and 23.
brake lightly from tim e to tim e w hen
coasting to a standstill (at a traffic
signal, for instance), provided that it is
safe to do so.
