Tow ing the vehicle

The tow ed vehicle should alw ays
be the lighter of the tw o vehicles.
If this is not the case, it is no longer
possible to control vehicle
Tow - starting
It is not possible to start the engine of a
vehicle equipped w ith an automatic
transm ission by tow ing or pushing.
For instructions on jump starting: refer
to page 190.
Never attem pt to use your vehicle to
push another car. If you do so, damage
to the energy- absorbing bumpers could
result.
Tow ing a vehicle w ith automatic
transmission
1 Place the selector lever in position N.

2 Tow ing speed:
M ax. 45 mph (70 km / h).
3 Tow ing distance:
M ax. 95 miles (150 km ).
4 Leave the ignition key at position 1 to
ensure that the brake lam ps, turn
signals, horn and w indshield w ipers
rem ain operative, and to prevent the
steering lock from engaging.
5 Sw itch on the hazard w arning
flashers (comply w ith country-
specific regulations).
Find some means of identifying the
vehicle in tow , for instance, place a sign
or w arning triangle in the rear w indow .
M ake sure that the ignition key
rem ains in position 1 even w hen
the electrical system has failed. This w ill
prevent the steering lock from
engaging. The steering and brakes are
w ithout pow er assist w hen the engine is
not running. This m eans that increased
effort is required for steering and
braking.<
Tow ing w ith a commercial tow
truck
> Do not tow w ith sling- type equip-
m ent.
> Use a w heel lift or flat bed carrier.
> Please com ply w ith applicable tow ing
law s.
Never allow passengers to ride in
a tow ed vehicle for any
