6-1. Introduction

This section provides block diagram level theory of
operation, troubleshooting, service and repair
information for the HP 16500A/16501A.

6-2. Safety Considerations

The HP 16500A/16501A has been designed in
accordance with accepted safety standards.
Safety symbols used with Hewlett-Packard
instruments are illustrated in the front of this
manual. These symbols should be reviewed
before service work is performed.
Maintenance should be performed by
trained service personnel aware of the
hazards involved (for example, fire and
electric sock). When maintenance can be
performed without power applied, remove
the power cord from the instrument.

6-3. Service Test Equipment
Required
Equipment required for service is listed in
section 1, table 1-2. Any equipment that satisfies
critical specifications given in the table may be
substituted.

6-4. Theory of Operation

This section contains block diagram level theory of
operation for the HP 16500A/16501A.
This level of theory is not intended for
component-level troubleshooting, rather it is to be
used to help isolate an instrument failure to a
replaceable assembly.
The theory of operation is divided into two parts:
the System Overview Theory and the
Microprocessor Theory.
