About Fax Machines
If you're a first-time fax machine use_;fax operation might seem a little
mysterious. You'll soon get used to the unusual fax tones on your phone line, and

Fax Tones and Handshake
When someone i ssending a fax, t heFAX/MFC sends f axcallingtones, ( CNG tones)

sending machine mustbegin the"handshake" w iththereceiving machine. E achtime

Thereceiving faxresponds w ithfaxreceiving tones-- loud,chirpingsounds. A
receiving f axchirpsforabout40seconds o verthephoneline,andthe screen
displays "RECEBIC' IfyourFM_MFC i ssetto theFAX ONIY Mode, i twillanswer
eveucall automatically w ithfaxreceiving tones. E venif theotherpartyhangs
up,yourFM_MFC c ontinuestosendthe "chirps"for about40seconds, a ndthe

When your FAX/MFC i s in FAX/TEL (F/T), it answerswith a short beep.Afterthis
beep,the FAS_MFC l istensfor CNG tones, and then respondswith receivingtones.
Thefax"handshake"isthetimein whichthesendingmachine's CNG tonesand
thereceiving machines"chirps"overlap. T hismustbeforat leasttwotofour
seconds, s othefaxmachines can understand howeachissendingand receiving
thefax.Thehandshake cannotbeginuntilthecallis answered, and theCNG
tonesonlylastfor about40seconds afterthenumberis dialed.Therefore, it's
importantforthereceiving machineto answerthecall in asfewringsaspossible.
When youhaveanexternal t elephone answering d evice (TAD) onyourfaxline,
