5 Performing Data Exchange Operations

This chapter describes how to operate Data Exchange.
• Performing File Transfer Operations
• Performing File Transfer Operations
Data Exchange file transfer operations are performed using the FCU GUI software installed on the
open-system hosts attached to the storage system.
The FCU GUI enables you to perform file transfer operations interactively, provides access to detailed
information on the Data Exchange source datasets and files, and displays error information for Data
Exchange operations. The FCU GUI also allows you to create and modify FCU parameter definition
files interactively.
When you perform Data Exchange operations that access datasets on -A, -B, or -C Data Exchange
volumes, FCU must have access to the Data Exchange volume definition file that defines these volumes.
When you perform Data Exchange operations that access ALC-generated datasets on OPEN-x FMT
Data Exchange volumes, FCU must have access to the separate FXoto volume definition file that defines
the OPEN-x FMT volumes. Since FCU can only access one Data Exchange volume definition file at a
time, the FCU parameter definition files must also keep operations using OPEN-x FMT volumes separate
from operations using -A, -B, or -C Data Exchange volumes. Before you start FCU GUI operations,
make sure that the desired Data Exchange volume definition file is available (datasetmount.dat
in current directory) and that the desired FCU parameter definition file contains Data Exchange
operations that access the volumes defined in the Data Exchange volume definition file. FCU will not
be able to perform operations that access volumes that are not defined in the current Data Exchange
volume definition file.
The FCU GUI for UNIX-based platforms and the FCU GUI for Windows systems are significantly
different.

using FCU from the UNIX command line (without the GUI), see

programs on the open-system host to access mainframe datasets on Data Exchange volumes, see

The FCU GUI enables you to perform Data Exchange file transfer operations interactively and provides
access to detailed information on the datasets/files in the specified Data Exchange source
volume/directory. The FCU GUI displays the Data Exchange operations in the FCU parameter definition
file (if specified), allows you to modify the FCU parameter definition file interactively, and also allows
you to enter FCU parameters and perform Data Exchange operations manually. The FCU GUI also
displays the error information for Data Exchange operations.
