Appendix A: Selecting Print Media
Paper and Print Media You Should
NOT Use in This Printer
Paper jams or poor print quality may result from
using print media that is not recommended for
use in this printer or from print media that is
damaged.
Do not use media with the following
characteristics.
• Paper that does not meet the size and weight
(16 lb to 43 lb) specifications of this printer
• Paper that is wrinkled, curled, torn, or bent
• Paper that is wet
• Paper with a surface that is extremely smooth
or extremely shiny
• Paper that is extremely rough or heavily
textured
• Paper that is sticky or has an adhesive surface
• Paper that is pasted
• Thermal paper
• Coated paper
• Carbon paper
• Paper that is unable to withstand a
temperature of 302˚F.
• Paper that is stapled or clipped
• Paper that is labeled "NOT recommended for
use in laser printers"
• Label stock with the backing sheets exposed

between the individual labels
• Multiple copy perforated checks
• Envelopes with thick or uneven edges
• Envelopes with transparent windows
• Envelopes with clasps attached to them
• Embossed envelopes
• Envelopes that contain more than 25% cotton
fiber

Print Areas

The print area of a page is the area on a given
paper size that can actually be printed. Print areas
for the SuperScript 870 printer are 5mm from the
outside edges. Common media sizes and their
corresponding print areas are as follows:
• Letter 8.5 in. x 11 in. (216 mm x 279 mm):
print area of 8.1 in. x 10.6 in. (206 mm x 269
mm)
• A4 210 mm x 297 mm:
print area of 200 mm x 287 mm
• Legal 8.5 in. x 14 in. (216 mm x 356 mm):
print area of 8.1 in. x 13.6 in. (206 mm x 346
mm)
• Commercial 10 (Com 10) 4.125 in. x 9.5 in. (105
mm x 241 mm):
print area of 3.725 in. x 9.1 in. (95 mm x 231
mm)
