Creating a proxy from a still or moving image
The Create Proxy command provides a quick way to create a still or movie proxy from
footage or compositions selected in the Project or Timeline window. The command opens
the render queue and sets a render item for the selected footage with Set Proxy chosen as
the postrender action. For more information on postrender actions, see "Understanding
the Post-Render Actions menu" in chapter 25. For more information on working with
proxies, see "About placeholders and proxies" in chapter 5.
To create a still or moving proxy:
1 Select the footage or composition in the Project or Timeline window from which you
want to create a proxy. If you want to create a still proxy from a moving image, use the
Footage window to go to the frame in the footage that you want to represent as the
poster frame for the proxy. For information on using the Footage window, see "Displaying
After Effects viewing controls in the Footage window" in chapter 3.
2 Choose File > Create Proxy > Still to create a still proxy or choose File > Create Proxy >
Movie to create a moving proxy.
3 Create a name and output designation for the proxy.
4 Adjust the render settings as necessary and render the footage. For information on
render settings, see "Changing render settings" in chapter 14.
Using the Pre-render command
The new Pre-render command provides an easy way to flatten your nested compositions,
greatly shortening your preview times. The command opens the render queue and creates
a render item for the selected composition with Import and Replace chosen as the
postrender action. To prerender a composition, select it in the Project or Composition
window and choose Composition > Pre-render. Adjust the pertinent render settings and
render the footage.
Using new output templates
After Effects includes default templates for the new Pre-render and Create Proxy
commands. As with previous templates, you can choose a different default template or
create your own. For information on using and changing templates, see "Creating and
using render settings templates" in chapter 14 and "Creating and using output module
templates" in chapter 14.
Note: Because you can choose a postrender action in each Output Module template,
changing the Output Module template could also change the postrender action.
Creating output chains
You can now drag output modules from the render queue to the Project window to create
a placeholder for the render queue output. This sets the postrender action for the render
queue item to Import and Replace. This is called "creating output chains" and can be useful
for creating files to be used in different compositions. For example, you can create a place-
holder for the render of a 24-fps movie and subsequently drag that placeholder into a 30-
fps composition. You can then work with other footage in the 30-fps composition; when
you are ready to render, the first composition will render at 24 fps, and the rendered
footage will replace the placeholder in the new 30-fps composition.
