(5.5) Layers
Duplicating and splitting a layer and its track matte
After Effects 5.5 now preserves the order of a layer and its track matte when you duplicate
them or split them. In the duplicated or split set, the track matte layer remains on top of
the fill layer. For example, previously, if your project contained layers AB, where A is the
track matte and B the fill layer, duplicating or splitting these resulted in the layer order
AA'BB'. Now, when you duplicate or split these layers, the layer order is ABA'B'. For infor-
mation on duplicating and splitting layers, see "Duplicating a layer" in chapter 6 and
"Creating new layers by splitting" in chapter 6.
Copying and pasting layers
After Effects 5.5 introduces new ways to manipulate and place layers and layer attributes.
Pasting layers at the current time
When copying and pasting a layer in the Timeline window, it is useful to be able to paste a
copied layer's In point at a specific time in the Timeline window.
To paste a layer at the current time:
1 In the Timeline or Project window, copy the layers or source footage you want to place
at a precise point in time.
2 Drag the current-time marker to the time where you want the layer with the earliest In
point to rest.
3 Press Ctrl+Alt+V (Windows) or Command+Option+V (Mac OS) to paste the layer.
Pasting into multiple layers and from one property to another
If you want to copy the keyframe attributes from one layer to multiple layers, or from one
property to another property (or properties) on a single layer, there's no need to perform
multiple copy-and-paste procedures. In After Effects 5.5, you can do this in one operation.
To paste keyframe attributes from a single layer to other layers or between
properties in a single layer:
1 Copy the keyframes in a single layer that you want to distribute to other layers or to
other properties within the layer you copied from.
2 Select the layers, or properties within the same layer you copied, to which you want to
apply the copied keyframes.
3 Choose Edit > Paste.
Note: You can copy keyframes from only one layer at a time.
