To create single or multiple compositions from multiple Project window items:
1 In the Project window, select at least two footage items.
2 Do one of the following:
Drag the selected footage to the New Composition button.
Choose File > New Composition from Selection.
3 Specify the following options in the New Composition from Selection dialog box as
they apply, and click OK:
Single Composition Specifies that one composition is created containing all of the
selected items.
Multiple Compositions Specifies that one composition is created for each of the
selected items. The composition size, frame rate, and duration are the same as those of
each respective source.
Use Dimensions From Specifies which of the selected footage items' dimensions are
used as the overall composition dimensions. This is unavailable if you choose Multiple
Compositions. The composition frame rate and duration will be the same as the footage
you choose in this menu. If you choose a still image from this menu, the resulting compo-
sition will have the same frame rate and duration as the most recently created compo-
sition.
Still Duration Specifies the duration of the stills in the new compositions.
Add to Render Queue Specifies that each new composition is added to the render
queue.
Sequence Layers Specifies how the layers are staggered in the new composition. This is
unavailable if you choose Multiple Compositions. The options here are the same as in the
Sequence Layers Keyframe Assistant. For more information on using this keyframe
assistant, see "Automatically arranging layers as a sequence" in chapter 6.
Replacing source footage globally by dragging in the Project
window
When working on a project, you may want to replace the source for a layer with another
item that is in the Project window and, subsequently, have the new source appear in all
the compositions that use the replaced (old) source. In After Effects 5.5, you can replace
every instance of a layer's source by dragging within the Project window. To perform this
global replacement, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag the new
item in the Project window to the item you want it to replace.
Revealing a layer in the Timeline or Composition window
In your work, you may have used one particular source footage or composition several
times over several open compositions, but want to reveal only one instance of its use. You
can now do this from the Project window. To reveal an instance of source footage or of a
composition used in the Timeline window, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS)
the source footage in the Project window and choose Reveal in Composition > (Compo-
sition Name, Layer Name) where Composition Name is the composition in which the
footage resides and Layer Name is the layer in which you used the source footage or
composition.
